Socio-economic environment: Ireland

Ireland has near 4 million inhabitants or 55 inhabitants per square kilometre. The level of urbanisation is very low: 59%.

Ireland has a GDP of 88 billion Euro or 22.000 Euro per inhabitant. The GDP per head is above average to European countries, as well as the growth of GDP. Economically, Ireland has the potential power and perspective to invest in stimulation of IST, on a National level as well as on an individual level.

The national Irish ICT and Telecom industry is some below average. Also the penetration of PC's at home is low, as is the ISDN infrastructure. From a commercial and infrastructural perspective, Ireland has to build up the IST market with a long term perspective.

Rates of (mobile) telephony are very high in Ireland. Penetration of PC's at home is some below average. The market needs investments and purchases of hardware before IST services can be successfully be introduced on a lager scale.

The wealth of an individual elderly person is average in Ireland. Continuous education by 54-64 year old people is low compared to other countries. Related to the below average penetration of PC's this could imply low knowledge of elderly people in the current supply of IST services.
