The general policy Belgium focuses on the promotion of active ageing by encouraging email use, training and the promotion of home automation to support independence. The Flemish Minister for Welfare, Health and Equal Opportunities published a policy document in 2000 which elaborates the government's view of an accessible society with accessible services. Planned policy interventions are "to encourage and support initiatives in the framework of life-long learning and to encourage and support those initiatives that stimulate, sensitise and allow older citizens to have access to the multimedia."
The Cabinet of the minister organised an orientated consultation with several experts in the field of "senior citizens and technology". The objective of this consultation was to obtain a broad overview of the initiatives, actions, needs, etc. with respect to senior citizens and digitalisation.
The Senior Citizens' Consultation Committee is the umbrella organisation of Flemish senior citizens' organisations. The Flemish Government considers the Senior Citizens' Consultation Committee as an important partner in preparatory policy work. The concrete operation rests on the contribution of the participating organisations and institutions. Furthermore, there are a large number of operational work groups, each responsible for examining a specific aspect of senior citizens' issues, and in turn, formulating proposals towards the authorities.
